Cause of Ice Cream HeadachesPrevention and Treatment of Ice Cream Headaches

Ice cream headaches usually manifest as a sudden, intense headache that can last from a few seconds to a minute. You may feel severe pain in your forehead or temples.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, the pain caused by cold stimuli is so common that it can occur in 30-40% of people who do not usually suffer from headaches. The symptoms are harmless and are not a sign of a condition to be concerned about.

Cause of Ice Cream Headaches

Cold food or drink can cause what’s known as “brain freeze.” This type of headache occurs due to rapid cooling, causing blood vessels in the roof of the mouth and brain to constrict. This constriction sends pain signals that result in a headache.

Prevention and Treatment of Ice Cream Headaches

Ice cream headaches usually do not require treatment. In fact, while the headache can be painful, it typically subsides quickly on its own. If you do not want to wait, you can relieve an ice cream headache by warming your tongue. This can be done by pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth or drinking a warm beverage.

To prevent ice cream headaches in the future, make sure to eat cold foods or drinks slowly.
